Neighborhood Assistance Program projects
Smith-Burke Park |
CPI has also coordinated a number of other successful NAP projects, including the creation of Smith-Burke Park — a half-acre park situated along the Union Pacific Railroad in the heart of California.
Circa1858, after railroad tracks were laid through California, The Missouri Pacific Railroad built the Central Hotel to house railroad employees and passengers. Later, Dr. J.P. Burke, a local doctor who practiced medicine in California for almost 50 years, purchased the property and resided in the structure along with his family who maintained residency until 1968. The half-acre property was purchased in 1990 by California Progress Inc., a non-profit corporation dedicated to the betterment of California, Missouri, in order to build a park in memory of the Central Hotel and Dr. J.P. Burke for the contributions each made to the community. The city park features an eye-catching gazebo, benches for relaxing, and a variety of well-tended floral gardens. CPI also was instrumental in building a shelter in the spot of the former city depot located nearby. |
Period Lighting |
Another major CPI-sponsored project includes turn-of-the-century lights located along the Highway 87 business district and sprinkled along a path of city streets leading to the Moniteau County Courthouse and Square.
