MONITEAU COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The mission of the Society is to collect and preserve local historical materials and family histories and to make those materials available to researchers and the general public. Volunteers at the Historical Society are currently partnering with CPI to compile a complete and accurate list of veterans to be listed on CPI’s Veterans Memorial at the Latham Memorial Family Park. Veterans who were residents at some point of Moniteau County's Linn or Walker Townships are included. |
The Moniteau County Historical Society building originally housed California’s original Post Office built in 1902. Other businesses were located in the north side of the building and the second floor held apartments. Later that space was used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Missouri Extension Service. What is now the museum side of the center was the Post Office itself. The turret on the front corner is a unique touch making it a local landmark. The building was well received by the U.S. Registry of Historic Buildings. California Progress Incorporated (CPI) purchased the building in 1992 and performed a complete renovation of the building and property. In 1994 the facility was deeded to Moniteau County Historical Society and houses its records and stores. It also displays local history and family records for genealogical research and an educational facility for school use. |
